Palmetto Health has South Carolina’s only federally funded comprehensive Hemophilia Center, serving both children and adults. Through the federal government’s 340b program, the Center is able to purchase hemophilia clotting factor concentrates at a substantially reduced price.
The Hemophilia Center serves 45-50 pediatric hemophilia patients and offers two clinics per month. Our multidisciplinary clinics address psychosocial needs and family dynamics to serve our patients and their families.
The Hemophilia Center has access to genetic testing to help determine the gene mutation that causes hemophilia, which occurs almost exclusively in men. About one-third of hemophilia patients have no family history.
Participation in the 340b program enables the Hemophilia Center to support bleeding disorder patients with a nurse coordinator, a physical therapist and a social worker, who provide essential aspects of their care. For non-government insured patients of the Hemophilia Center, the reduced-cost medication can be offered subject to insurance approval. The center also serves 25-30 adult patients.
